The 18th edition of The Site Festival, Stroud Gloucestershire, starts on the 1st May 2014 and it will bring a dynamic programme of visual arts, performance, music, screening and open studios. The artist-led festival promotes collaborations and projects including a wide range of visual media, ceramics, textiles and poetry.
My collaboration with the artist Rita Fenning for the Open Studios http://ritafenning13.wix.com/ritafenning-web explores the concepts of ‘memory’ and ‘identity’, in an attempt to define and compare childhood stories and games in two different cultures, British and Romanian during the Cold War.
Rita has produced a series of artist books and installations as well as a doll’s house which will be the centre of a new exhibition open to the public in her studio. The exhibition is part of The Open Studios Festival which will be launched on Friday, 9th May 2014.
The exhibition in Rita’s studio will be open to the public on 10th, 11th, 17th and 18th May 2014.
A preview with some of the included work and video clip, to follow shortly.
I covered my face with black ink
Gathered all my possessions in one small bundle
And set fire to everything
At the top of the hill.
Look this way
I waved my burning hand
As you walked in your imaginary map
With a preoccupied stare
But nothing disturbed your pace,
The door shut behind with an incredible force.
The thin walls echoed.
The island went silent again.
My half shut eyes were able to reach
At the seed of the poem where god left
A freshly baked bread
Just for me.
The white crust had my initials on it
But I could not bear to eat it
In case I had nothing else left
For the rest of my days.
(‘Spiegel im Spiegel’)
Let’s say I promise to keep talking
Until the very end and
Look properly at every single road on the map
So none of you gets lost in town in the dark.
My voice will memorise the way back
My pen will noisily follow the thin line
Between the frozen bird and the white stone.
I don’t have beautiful hands but
Apply with confidence for the job.
There is always a need for a poet
Without previous experience
As in terms of poetry
History is worse than death.
My bright future will spare the land
Beautiful poisonous tears.
I am not a blood stain that speaks
But a breath which unfolds
Another version of the truth
The one that matters before the big freeze.
My definition of you will always
Stop the bullet midair.
The well in which I was born
Is the mirror in which we all look.
